mindfulness
this project considers the act of wearing clothes. taking a normal knitted top and considering our experiences of wearing it. do we want our jumpers to keep us warm with a high neck, do we wish to be seen at night with light reflecting yarns, is it about noticing where the wear is and reinforcing it. to the extremes of taking it apart. adding colour and texture to the beige. remaking the structure to force a new way of wearing. as I reposition fine gauge knitting I will post my images here.

re-designing a garment.
adding the experience
adding the experience, while researching traditional knitted garments there were some interesting 'facts' that came out, one being that fishermen had removable sleeves so that while working bringing the nets in they didn't get their cuffs soggy and cold. I also added the personal, when the temperature dips I get a cold neck, for this piece I added a higher neck and included stitch patterns and yarn variations to contrast with the plain sweater.

sdarning memories.
clothes record our lives, not in a self-conscious way, not like a selfie but where our arm bends to create the creases is simply how long our arm is, the soles of our shoes record the subtleties of how we walk, the elbow and cuff of a jumper evidence a life lived. the quietness of a thousand small touches is what I want to celebrate. this is swiss darning, it follows the route of the stitch creating a pattern with all the qualities of the original fabric. not an invisible mend but something to catch the eye. way back before the sewing machine, there was a roaring trade in second hand clothes, all creases, stains and wear where known as 'memories'. then, the more memories the less the value of the clothes as it held so much of the previous owner life in those lines. that person is important yet the ephemeral qualities of cloth often sees these life memories lost.
